Our Values

Our Values

It's All About The Relationship

Our values underpin all of the work done in our counselling sessions with clients:

  • It is with warmth and kindness we are held with compassion.

  • It is through connection and understanding we gain courage and insight.

  • It is when we experience empathy and acceptance that we feel heard and valued.

  • It is by opening ourselves up to new ways of responding to situations that we regain our inner balance.

  • It is in the quiet stillness that we hear our breath.

  • And it is in these moments that we are able to heal and find strength to move forward.

The Little Blue Fairy Wren

In the ever-shifting landscape of life, the blue fairy wren offers a quiet lesson in resilience. Though small and seemingly delicate, it thrives amidst change—navigating new seasons, environments, and challenges.

In counselling, we learn to navigate life’s tangled paths, uncovering strength we didn’t know we had. Like the wren, we may feel fragile at times, but we are never without the capacity to develop and grow.

This tiny bird becomes a symbol of our own capacity to thrive. We can discover inner resources we didn’t know we had.

Healing isn’t about avoiding change—it’s about learning to move through it, gently and bravely, one step at a time.

Whether you're navigating grief, anxiety, or life transitions, counselling is a gentle space where healing begins.

Parenting

Karen has a 'Parenting' column in the Bundaberg Today newspaper every Friday. She speaks on topics that relate to parenting in every day life. Be sure to get your copy of the newspaper every Friday and check out her helpful parenting tips. The newspaper is also available online.

Karen also specialises in counselling for parents. Parenting is one of the most important, and yet sometimes the most difficult task we can undertake in our lifetimes. There are so many opinions and ideas out there and it's hard to know what works. It is important to look at the information that has years of research within the parenting world.

Karen Barlow is a licenced practitioner of:

  • Circle of Security Parenting - a well respected parenting group program, which she has facilitated for almost a decade.

Karen is a certified practitioner in:

  • 'Evidence-based Parenting - Raising Children to Thrive' by Australia's parenting expert, Dr Justin Coulson.

  • 'Bringing Up Great Kids' - Australian Childhood Foundation

  • 'Reboot Now' - Sarah Roulston

Karen is keen to assist people in their parenting roles via individual counselling with lots of wisdom and understanding support.

Faith‑Sensitive Counselling

For clients who value their Christian faith, Karen offers counselling that honours your beliefs and allows you to bring your spirituality into the therapeutic space in a way that feels natural and comfortable.

If it’s meaningful for you, we can gently integrate Biblical principles alongside evidence‑based therapeutic approaches, drawing on both counselling insight and the wisdom of Scripture.

Testimonials

For over 12 years I've been trying to understand what's happening to me. I told Karen my concerns and problems and she explained everything to me about my behaviours, body and my threat system and for the first time in my life I understood what was happening to me. It's hard to change a behaviour if you don't understand why the behaviour is there. Karen taught me this.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some answers to the questions we often get asked.

There is a saying that 'Time heals all wounds', but according to Dr Henry Cloud the co-author of 'Boundaries', it's not time that heals wounds, it is what you DO in that time that heals emotional wounds. Counselling provides insight, awareness and understanding about the issues you may be facing. It also provides knowledge and skills to help you cope better and move forward to help you have a more positive approach to life. Ultimately, the aim of counselling is for our lives to be renewed.

Yes. Phone counselling is available!

During COVID I spent 2 years providing a high level of phone counselling to my clients and many of them opted to stay with phone counselling even after COVID was over. One of the benefits of phone and online counselling is that you don't have to worry about transport and parking. Another benefit is that you can sit in your own comfy chair at home, get a hot or cold drink and chill out. At the end of each session, I offer a relaxation, and that means you can stay in your chair and stay in a relaxed state for a lot longer than if you had to get in a car and drive home. It's lovely!

A Welcoming Space

Our counselling space offers a warm, welcoming environment designed to help you feel at ease from the moment you arrive. Soft seating and a calm, uncluttered layout create a sense of comfort and safety, inviting honest conversation and reflection. It’s a space where you can slow down, explore your thoughts, and feel genuinely supported. Whether you’re seeking clarity, healing, or personal growth, this room provides a gentle, grounding backdrop for meaningful change.
